Blues are .500 after shutout against Marthas Vineyard
The Blues were on fire at Muzzy against the Sharks.
To end the weekend, the Bristol Blues continued the win streak after a shut-out game against the NECBL South leaders, the Martha's Vineyard Sharks. The Blues defeated the Sharks 5-0 at Muzzy Field.
The Blues scored runs for four straight innings. In the middle of the bottom fourth, Antonio Ducatelli (Fairfield) got the scoring started after Thomas Zwirecki (Rutgers) singled through the left side, scoring Ducatelli and advancing Nicholas Francuzenko (Rider) to second. Giving Bristol a 1-0 lead.
Bottom of the fifth: Nick Flores (VCU) doubled down the left field line, sending Sean Britt (St. John's) home, giving the Blues a 2-0 lead. Britt was on fire and singled to right field, scoring both Colin Crowley (Winthrop) and Cal Chance (UMass Lowell). To get the Blues a 5-0 lead, Zwirecki and Ducatelli struck again. Zwirecki singled to left field, scoring Ducatelli once again.
Frank Spirito (UCONN) started on the mound for the Blues and was a force to be reckoned with. Spirito only allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out four. Spirito's first pitched strikeout of the game was at the top of the first, followed by an out hit to Christopher DiPrima (Yale). Spirito also pitched strikeouts to close out the top of the second and to start off the third and in the middle of the third.
Sam Michel (Northwestern), Jesse Specter (Shepherd), and Liam Diehl (Towson) all allowed only one hit and no runs. Diehl also struck out one, and Michel and James Mulvaney (Fairfield) each struck out two.
The Blues defense shut down the Sharks all game, but in the top of the second, the defense was on fire, not letting Martha's Vineyard get a single hit. There was a strikeout to end the top of the inning, but to start off, the first out was hit to Ducatelli, followed by an out at third by Crowley. To close out the third, after Spirito pitched his fourth strikeout, Britt threw to Evan Menzel (UCONN) to get a Shark stealing.
The Blues return to Muzzy for a mid-week matchup on July 22 at 6:30. The Blues will face the Upper Valley Nighthawks.
