Blues fall to Gulls 5-4
The Blues fell to the Newport Gulls 5-4 on Saturday night. The Blues are now 10-9 on the season.
Liam Diehl (Towson) got things started on the mound for the Blues, allowing only one run to the Gulls. Diehl ended the night having allowed only three hits and four runs, and he struck out five against the Gulls.
Mason Glickman (University of New Haven) went onto the mound for the Blues at the top of the fifth and helped shut down the Gulls for three straight innings. Glickman did not allow any runs or hits and recorded three strikeouts.
At the bottom of the third, the Gulls were up 2-0 when Antonio Ducatelli (Fairfield) gave the Blues their first run of the night, making it a one-run game. Nick Francuzenko (Towson) reached first base on an error, and Chris DiPrima advanced to second, giving Ducatelli the chance to score.
Evan Menzel (UCONN) singled, advancing to second, and Scott Gell scored. In the bottom of the ninth, the Gulls were up 5-2 when the Blues came in hot, closing the gap to one run.
Menzel singled through right field, followed by a double to right field by Nick Flores (VCU), advancing Menzel to third. Flores advanced to third, and Menzel scored on a passed ball. Ducatelli grounded out to second base, and Flores scored the Blues' final run of the night.
The Blues return to Muzzy Field on June 28 at 5 p.m. for Strike Out Cancer. The Blues will play the Keene State Swamp Bats.
