Gulls walk off Blues in 4-3 loss
The Blues battled the Gulls to the end but it wasn't enough as Newport came out on top.
The Blues dropped their second straight game after a 3-0 start to the 2026 season. In a walk off to the Newport Gulls to fall to 3-2.
The first four innings of the game went scoreless, John Hughes (Michigan) struck out six batters across three innings and only gave up three hits for Bristol. Cole Johnson, (Austin Peavy) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 5th with a three-run home run to get the Gulls on the board.
Scott Gell (Stonybrook) singled in the top of the eighth to put runners on the corner with nobody out. Westin Boyle, (Purdue) got The Blues on the board with an RBI groundout to make it a 3-1 game. A Steve Polizzi (St. Peters) single drove in another run and a fielder's choice later in the inning knotted the score at 3-3.
After a scoreless bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth Newport was set up to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth. Braxton Tramel (East Carolina University) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up to second on a passed ball. Adam Broski (Michigan State) singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. A walk loaded the bases and Maddox Haley (Gonzaga) singled to right field to score the game winning run as the Gulls walked it off by a score of 4-3.
Despite the three run rally by Bristol in the eight to tie the game, the Blues couldn't pull away with a lead and Newport got the hits when it mattered most.
Bristol will look to get back in the win column as they travel to South Kingstown Rhode Island as they take on the Ocean State Waves on Wednesday night.
